A pirate ship has dropped anchor in Wilmington’s Seagate neighborhood.
The royal blue, ship-shaped playground was just installed at what will be the newest public park in the city system.
At 6001 Mariner Lane (Hinton Avenue renamed), the park will memorialize the site’s previous owners, the late Edward John “Captain Eddy” Haneman and his wife, Mary Haneman. A bulletin explained the Hanemans, who donated the land to the city, were “well known in the area for sport fishing/recreation in the 1950s-1990s.”
Benches, a walking trail and parking spots are being prepared around the playground on the acre parcel.
The city expects completion in March.
A plaque on site will inform visitors of the Hanemans’ gift.
