Wilmington police have charged a Wilmington man in a traffic fatality that occurred on Independence Boulevard Thursday evening.

Mark William Neil Estep, 38, has been charged with felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired and failure to yield the right of way, according to police spokeswoman Linda Rawley.

The victim of the traffic fatality, 53-year-old John A. Jackson, Jr., of Wilmington, was killed in the wreck. Jackson was a passenger in a jeep that was struck by Estep’s Chevrolet Blazer at the intersection with Shipyard Boulevard, Rawley said.

Officers responded to the incident just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Jackson was killed as a result of injuries sustained in the wreck.

“Fire crews had to forcefully remove several passengers from one vehicle,” Rawley said.

Multiple passengers were sent to the hospital.

Estep was taken to the New Hanover County Detention Facility where he was placed under a $30,000 secured bond.
