WILMINGTON — When temperatures fall below 30 degrees, the Grace United Methodist Church on Grace Street opens its warming shelter for people experiencing homelessness to seek respite.

It will open Jan. 16 and 17, providing cots, pizza, snacks and other items for its guests. The shelter opens at 5:30 p.m. for guest check-in, first-come, first-served; it does not accept pets.

Organized by multiple United Methodist pastors and volunteers, anyone who wishes to help with the event next week can sign up here. The shelter needs roughly 30 people who can help with setting up the pop-up shelter, as well as checking in guests, serving dinner, hosting overnight, serving breakfast and more.

Supplies are also needed, including mini deodorant, cold medicine, razors, backpacks, combs, nail clippers, coffee and creamers, paper plates and bowls, and Lysol spray.

Monetary donations are also accepted, as the shelter costs $550 to operate for one night.
