Wilmington Hammerheads FC had a golden opportunity to move into the eighth and final playoff spot within the United Soccer League Eastern Conference on Saturday night, but Harrisburg City found a late equalizer from Bobby Warshaw in a 1-1 draw.

After Orlando City B fell 1-0 to FC Cincinnati earlier in the night, Wilmington was in position to move ahead of eighth-place Orlando with a result and into the postseason picture with one match remaining. However, the Hammerheads inability to put away teams down the stretch came back to haunt Wilmington again as they were not able to hang on, settling for one point in the standings to remain on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs.
Wilmington was the aggressor in the early minutes as Austin Martz gave the visiting side a lead in the third minute. A Harrisburg City miscue in the defensive third gave Liam Miller possession and the veteran midfielder sent a through ball toward the penalty spot. With Martz making his run from the right, he slotted home an easy score for his fourth goal of the season and an early 1-0 advantage.
Hammerheads’ goalkeeper Eric Ati was tested throughout the second half and preserved the clean sheet until the 78th minute when Warshaw found the back of the net off an assist from Paul Wilson.
Wilmington moved to 7-12-10 (31 points) overall heading into a must win situation against the Richmond Kicker in the regular season home finale at Legion Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Scoring:
3’ – WIL – Austin Martz (Liam Miller)
78’ – HAR – Bobby Warshaw (Paul Wilson)
