Wilmington Hammerheads FC got three assists from Stefan Defregger as they took a 3-0 victory against Toronto FC II at Legion Stadium on Saturday night.
After maybe their most disappointing performance of the season last weekend in New York, Wilmington wanted to rebound strongly in front of its home crowd of nearly 4,000 fans. The Hammerheads did just that with a win that moved them to 20 points this season, keeping the home side right in the mix in the Eastern Conference playoff race as they reached the midway point of the season.
The Hammerheads got on the front foot early and scored the opening goal 14 minutes in as Stefan Defregger’s cutback from the right side of the penalty area was put home by Casey Townsend. Defregger was at the center of the action again as Wilmington doubled its lead six minutes before halftime as he controlled a turnover in midfield and then slipped in Austin Martz for a finish into the left corner. Defregger added this third assist of the night one minute into the second half as Logan Miller was the beneficiary of his cross from the right for a header.
It was a tough night overall for Toronto as several key absences saw some newcomers to the starting lineup. That likely led to some of the errors that helped the Hammerheads maintain the upper hand, particularly on Martz’s goal six minutes before halftime.
Wilmington Hammerheads FC play three of their next four games on the road beginning with a trip to Charlotte Independence on July 9.
