The Score: High school soccer season kicks off; baseball, softball recap

Baseball

New Hanover 13     Pender 2

Casey Miller allowed two earned runs on three hits over five innings of work for New Hanover. Adam Pecoraro finished with 2 RBI’s and three runs scored to pace the Wildcats’ offense.

New Hanover plated three in the first and added six more in the second to put the game in check.

West Brunswick 3   South Columbus 0

The Trojans plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab a 3-0 shutout win against South Columbus.

Zack Johnson had an RBI single in the decisive frame, while Tristan Lewis, Tyler McDuffie and Austin Turner each scored one run. Jonathan Carlyle struck out four over 5.2 innings of work for West Brunswick, allowing just one hit and two walks.

Lewis and Hunter Ashburn each went 1-for-3 at the plate. Kevin Powers recorded the win by tossing 1.3 innings of scoreless relief.

West Columbus 4    Laney 0

Trey Benton struck out 10 for West Columbus in the 4-0 result.

North Brunswick 15    East Columbus 7 

 

Softball

 Topsail 4   Swansboro 2

Victoria Elder struck out 12 and added two hits at the plate for Topsail.

West Brunswick 3    South Columbus 2

Ciera Watts drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift West Brunswick in a 3-2 victory at home over South Columbus.

Morgan Beeler earned the win on the stripe, while Haley Long paced the Trojans attack with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Soccer

Laney 6    Lumberton 2

Anna Rae Porcelli and Haley Shand had two goals each for Laney, while Alex Butorovich recorded one score and two assists.

Hoggard 2   Swansboro 1

Mary Ormsby and Siara Southerland scored one goal apiece to lift Hoggard in a 2-1 season opening result at Swansboro on Tuesday.

 New Hanover 2    Croatan 2

Liza McLatchy and Abbey Campbell each found the back of the net for New Hanover. Joanie Richardson recorded one assist, while Emily Leister and Flannery Hutko had four combined saves in goal.

New Hanover is 0-1-1 overall and play Fuquay-Varina on Friday.

Havelock 2   Topsail 1

Carsyn Malpass scored for Topsail on a headed ball off of a corner kick from Lexi Gilley.
