Brown makes TD grab for East Carolina; Sheehan guides Catawba; college football roundup

Saturday marked the second game played this season by New Hanover High School alum Trevon Brown and the second consecutive weekend in which the sophomore made a touchdown reception for East Carolina.  Quarterback James Summers entered the game in the second quarter, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more to spur the Pirates to a 49-23 victory over SMU.

With East Carolina (3-2, 1-1 American) trailing 23-7, a pair of scores got the Pirates to within two at the half and Summers threw a 47-yard strike to Brown early in the second half for the lead. The former Wildcat finished the day with four catches for 85 yards.

After being suspended for the first three weeks of the season, Brown has emerged as a top threat for East Carolina, with 129 yards receiving, eight receptions and two scores. He also has two kick returns for 29 yards.

No. 3 Ole Miss was stunned in Gainesville, Florida as the No. 25 Gators scored the first 25 points of the game to hand the Rebels their first loss of the season, 38-10, in a game nationally televised on ESPN. Junior transfer Terry Caldwell (Hoggard) saw limited action in the ballgame, making just one tackle.

In the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Conference, Catawba rallied past visiting Newberry to grab 17-13 on Saturday afternoon at a soggy Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.  The Indians upped their record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC.

Trailing late in the third quarter, quarterback Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, N.C./Laney HS) broke for a 60-yard run to the Newberry 17.  The run came on the first offensive play after the Wolves went up 13-3.  Three plays later, Sheehan completed a third-down pass for 16 yards to cut the deficit to 13-10 with 55 seconds left in the quarter.

After forcing Newberry to punt on the ensuing possession, Catawba had a big third-and-11 from their own 43 when Sheehan completed a short pass to Gary Williams (Southport, N.C./S. Brunswick HS), who turned it into a 44-yard gain to the Newberry 13.  The Indians eventually scored on a run play and held Newberry to just one first down on its final three possessions after Catawba took the fourth-quarter lead.

Sheehan led Catawba thanks to his long run, finishing with 88 yards on eight carries.  He also completed 7-of-12 passes for 95 yards and one score.  Williams was the leading receiver for the Indians, with three catches for 66 yards.

Ian Bergmann (Laney) assisted on one tackle in a 17-12 win for the Wingate Bulldogs. Freshman Keevin Thompson (Hoggard) made three carries for zero yards and Julius Reynolds made six tackles as North Carolina A&T defeated Hampton 45-31. Frank Keller (Ashley) also made his third consecutive start on the offensive line for Presbyterian College, but the Blue Hose fell to Western Carolina 33-21.
