FSU sweeps Diamond Hawks; UNCW women’s basketball, softball win on Sunday

Gavin Stupienski collected four hits, including a home run, but nationally ranked Florida State held off UNCW for a 9-8 win to complete a sweep of the Seahawks at Dick Howser Stadium on Sunday.

The Seminoles ran their record to 8-3 with their fourth straight home win, while the Seahawks dropped to 6-3 on the season. The three losses were by a combined four runs.

Taylor Folsom (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for FSU, limiting the Seahawks to a run, unearned, on two hits over two innings. Billy Strode recorded his third save of the weekend and his fifth of the season after retiring two of the three batters he faced.

Stupienski homered in the third inning and added three singles later in the game. He scored four runs and knocked in one.

UNCW opened a 6-2 lead in the third inning with three runs in the second and three more in the third. Florida State, however, roughed up the Seahawks for five runs in the third, chasing starter Evan Phillips for a 7-6 lead. FSU tacked on two runs in the fourth for a 9-6 advantage.

The Seahawks begin 13-game homestand on March 4 when they host N.C. Central at 4 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Seahawk Digital Network at UNCWsports.com.

 

UNCW claims 76-69 win at College of Charleston

The Seahawks used a combined 43-point performance from sophomore guard Brie Mobley and senior guard Kelva Atkins to earn their fifth win in the last six games, a 76-65 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the College of Charleston at TD Arena on Sunday night.

With the win, UNCW improved to 13-15 overall and 9-8 in the CAA, while moving into sole possession of fifth place in the league ledger.

Atkins made 10 of 15 shots from the floor and was 2-for-3 from the free throw line to score a game-high 23 points. Coming off a school-record 46-point effort against Delaware, Mobley added a 20-point performance against the Cougars after an 8-for-18 showing from the field.

UNCW returns home on Wednesday night to host Hofstra in the regular season finale for both teams. Opening tip-off from Trask Coliseum is slated for 7 p.m. and the game will be available on the Seahawk Digital Network.

 

Late rally sparks UNCW softball past North Carolina A&T

Freshman pitcher Sarah Davis scattered seven hits over nine innings and delivered the game-tying double in the bottom of the seventh to lift UNCW over North Carolina A&T 3-2 in nine innings late Sunday in softball action at Boseman Field.

The Seahawks now stand 7-4 after edging the Aggies and falling to Marist 6-4 earlier in the day in the finale of the five-team Seahawk Softball Spring Classic. Coach Kristy Norton’s club finished 4-1 in the weekend tournament and host Norfolk State on Saturday, March 7, in the University Area Hampton Inn Showcase.

North Carolina A&T pushed across two runs in the top of the first inning and the score stood until the Seahawks broke through in the bottom half of the seventh.
