High school playoffs: West survives opening-round scare; Hanover, North eliminated

With the game tied late in the fourth quarter Xavier Robinson lifted No. 17 South View to a 54-52 win over No. 16 New Hanover on a last second layup at Brogden Hall on Thursday night.

The Wildcats held a six-point advantage at the midway point of the final frame, but Robinson knocked down treys in consecutive possessions to tie the game 47-47, and Isiah Vinson gave the Tigers its first lead of the game with a traditional three-point play at the two-minute mark of the fourth quarter.

Lawrence Williams answered on the other end of the floor and Brian Howell tied the game 52-52 after Robinson put South View back in front on a floater with less than 60 seconds to go in regulation.

New Hanover finishes the season 16-7 overall, while the Tigers head to the second round of the 4A playoffs.

3A playoffs

West Brunswick 62      West Craven 57

Trailing by 13 headed into the fourth quarter, West Brunswick came storming back in the final eight minutes of the game to survive and advance through the opening round of 3A playoffs as third-seeded Trojans upended No. 30 West Craven 62-57 in Shallotte on Thursday night.

Senior Gray Cheers went 14-of-16 from the free throw line in the final period and finished with a game-high 29 points. Classmate Saadiq Johnson also knocked a big three-ball in the comeback, while Alex Clarida closed with 10 points to put three West Brunswick players in double figures.

Johnson scored 13 points for the Trojans, who trailed for most the game until outscoring the Eagles 29-11 in the fourth quarter. West Craven was issued four technical fouls in the game and committed multiple turnovers late in the second half against West Brunswick’s pressure defense to aide the response .

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead behind the shooting of Braxton Cherry and Zac Cuthbertson, who combined for seven three-pointers in the contest.

No. 3 West Brunswick now awaits the winner of the No. 11 Northern Nash/No. 19 Southern Lee first-round matchup. The Trojans will play at home in a game and time yet to be announced.
