New Hanover opened its slate with one of its longest road trips of the year, but the Wildcats came to play and outshot Croatan 18-4 in a 3-1 win. Bryan Gunnell put in two goals and Franco Fernandez chipped in with his first score of the year. Max Johnson and Connor Swanson both shared time at keeper and combined for four saves.

Cape Fear Academy 6 Wilmington Christian 0
The Hurricanes moved to 3-0 on the young season with a win over Wilmington Christian on Monday. David Durham had three saves in the shutout for CFA, while Zach Tomosunas and Trey Moore notched two scores apiece.
The Canes have an early test on the schedule Wednesday, Aug. 21, as CFA entertains the reigning Mideastern Conference champion, Ashley Eagles.

Volleyball
Topsail 3 Pender 1

The high school volleyball season kicked off Monday night as Topsail opened non-conference play with a 3-1 win at home over Pender. The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 2-1 lead, but the Patriots battled back with a 26-24 win before dropping game four 21-25.
Junior Kayla Hyatt served up six aces, had 10 kills and recorded 19 digs, while Blaine Gibson recorded 21 points.
Topsail (2-0) has the rest of the week off before returning to play on Monday, Aug. 26, with a trip to Pender.
