Law enforcement responded to what they thought was a stabbing Sunday evening, but by Monday WPD said the victim may not have died from stab wounds after all. The cause of death for 54-year-old Guy Wescott is currently under investigation and pending an autopsy. Though WPD is investigating the incident as a felony hit and run.

Dispatchers sent WPD units to a reported stabbing in the 2800 block of Carolina Beach Road Sunday. Upon arrival, officers located knives on the ground and two victims suffering from serious injuries. The victims were in the roadway and had been hit by a vehicle.

Wescott died on the scene while the other victim was transported to the hospital by EMS.

“Progress in the investigation and additional evidence indicates a stabbing may not have occurred, as previously reported,” WPD said in a release.

Officers are searching for a dark-colored SUV with front-end damage, which is suspected to have hit the men walking along Carolina Beach Road.

WPD investigators are working to determine all specific details surrounding the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call the WPD at (910) 343-3609 or by using the Tip 411 app.
