Happy Hippies Java Hut
Started by sisters Barbara and Terry Carter, the Happy Hippies Java Hut is now open on K Avenue in Kure Beach. Formerly the Shirt Shack, the Carters said the 475-square-foot space is perfect for a coffee shop.
“We had been scoping out buildings,” Barbara Carter said. “We kept watching it.”
Its doors tout anti-GenX labels and its sink is equipped with a reverse osmosis filter. With nitro coffee, cold brew, smoothies and specialty teas, the Carters are “going with the flow,” according to the store’s posted hours.
With help from their parents, neighbors, and the owners of Old North Coffee, the Happy Hippies Java Hut opened last week. The coffee spot is open Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. and stays open an hour later, until 10 p.m., from Friday through Sunday at 109 K Avenue.
Sher-Bert’s Shaved Ice Cream Parlor
Located at 102 Fort Fisher Boulevard, Sher-Bert’s Shaved Ice Cream Parlor offers a twist on traditional soft serve. Though the corner shop will serve traditional ice cream to those that ask, it specializes in shaved ice cream.
To create shaved ice cream, air is removed from the cream before it’s frozen into a block, then shaven finely into a ribbon-like texture.
Sher-Bert’s Shaved Ice Cream Parlor opened in May and recently started serving hot dogs from its walk-up windows. The new shop is open Sunday through Thursday from 1 to 10 p.m. and Monday through Saturday from 12 to 11 p.m.
