Fourth of July parking and street closures for Wilmington area celebrations

WILMINGTON — The Fourth of July is almost here and for those hoping on catching some firework displays and partake in other celebrations, knowing where to park and how to navigate some of the closed streets is important. Several municipalities have released parking information as well as street closures for celebrations.

Wilmington

Visitors to Wilmington will be able to watch fireworks from a barge on the Cape Fear River and enjoy live music and food vendors starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The city has asked visitors park on the side of downtown that is closest to the direction they will travel after the fireworks are over.

For those planning on leaving immediately after the fireworks, expect a one to two-hour delay while leaving downtown.

Pets are not allowed downtown during specials events such as the Independence Day celebration.

On street parking is free all day on Tuesday, and parking decks will charge an event fee after 2 p.m., the fees range from $7-10.

There will be several street closures in Wilmington Tuesday, according to a city press release.

  • North Water Street, between Market and Grace streets, will close at 1:30 p.m.
  • Princess Street between North Water and North Front streets will close at 1:30 p.m.
  • Market Street between North Water and North Front streets will close at 1:30 p.m.
  • Chestnut Street, between North Front and North 3rd streets, will close as early as 5 p.m.
  • Streets west of 2nd Street toward the river will close as early as 6 p.m. (Once parking is no longer available, streets will close.)
  • US 421 North exit off 74/76 will close as early as 6 p.m.

Surf City

Visitors to Surf City can watch fireworks Monday evening while enjoying live music and food vendors at Southside Park starting at 6 p.m.

Surf City suggests using the North Topsail high-rise bridge to help ease congestion. Parking in Southside Park is only for VIP and handicap parking.

Carolina Beach

The Town of Carolina Beach will have fireworks and live entertainment Monday evening starting at 6:30 p.m.

There will not be any street closures and parking is enforced until 7 p.m., Meaghan Wright of the Pleasure Island Chamber of Commerce said.

The fireworks will be launched from the Carolina Beach Boardwalk and the actual boardwalk will be closed, Wright said. Parking will be on a first-come bases, so get there early, she said.
