
NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The National Weather Service has issued a sever weather alert for Thursday night and is warning of minor flooding in low-lying areas around downtown Wilmington.
The alert is for the hours of 8 p.m. to midnight. Heavy rains are expected to cause the Cape Fear to rise to almost 6 feet above the average low-tide height. The highest waters are expected between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m.
According to the alert, portions of Water Street just south of Market Street could have as much as 6 inches of water on it. Further south, portions of River Road are also expected to flood.
Across the Cape Fear River, Battleship Road could have as much as 12 inches of water on it, according to the same alert.
