WILMINGTON — Ready to show some love? There’s just hours before the close of submissions in the Port City Daily Valentine’s Day Haiku Contest. So, this Valentine’s Day, pull out that pen and paper and release your inner poet! We’re offering great prizes for to the top two poets – a spending spree on our “Save30 Store.”
What better way is there to celebrate the day of love than to conjure up some poetic verses for special someone? And win a prize too? Whether you’re writing to a friend, a loved one, significant other or the world, we want to share your Haiku with our readers.
Port City Daily has already received some great Haikus from our readers!
A haiku, as you may recall from elementary school creative writing days, is a simple format: 17 syllables, set up on three lines with five, seven and five syllables, per line, respectively.
More than two dozen haiku submissions have been received so far. Take a look at two of the submissions we’ve had so far, picked at random:

Candy and flowers are everywhere

Entries can be submitted until noontime on Friday, Feb. 10.
Team members at Port City Daily, 98.3 FM The Penguin and 93.7/106.3 FM The Dude will vote on their top five favorite haiku entries before letting you, our readers, determine this year’s ultimate winner. Follow Port City Daily on Facebook and be ready show some love for your favorite Haiku.
Our staff will choose the top five and Port City Daily will begin its “Like” contest on Facebook for the top two Haiku entries beginning Saturday, Feb. 11. It will run until close of business Monday, Feb. 13. The contest winners will be announced on Valentine’s Day at about 10 a.m., Feb. 14.
First prize will receive a $100 gift certificate to the Save30 Store and the second prize winner will receive a $50 gift certificate. The Save30 Store is Local Voice Media’s partnership program with local businesses that offers full-value, no-restriction gift certificates at 30 percent off.
