Approximately 200 people attended an open house event Sunday for the new inpatient facility, which includes, among other amenities, private patient rooms equipped with the latest care technology and furnishings.

The hospital addition also has two new oversized rooms to accommodate patients recovering from joint replacement or other orthopedic procedures, large special needs rooms for patients requiring additional space for medical equipment or therapy, a negative-pressure room for patients requiring isolation and a centrally located nurses station.

In a surprise announcement Sunday, the facility was named in honor of practicing Dosher Memorial Hospital surgeon Dr. Robert Zukoski.

More than half–15–of the planned 25 patient rooms have been completed. The remaining 10 will be completed early this summer, according to Dosher officials.

Hospital staff members were on hand during the open house to talk with attendees and answer questions.

“The opening of our new patient care unit marks a milestone for Dosher Hospital and for the community we serve,” Dosher President and CEO Tom Siemers said.“In planning and constructing our new inpatient wing, attention was paid to every detail. This will dramatically enhance the quality of inpatient care Dosher Hospital can provide to the community we serve.”

The renovation project includes the total reconstruction of about 14,000 square feet of space and the addition of another 6,000 square feet to the hospital. It was made possible in part through an $8.5 million U.S. Department of Agriculture loan. The total cost of the project is estimated at $11.2 million.

The architect for the hospital renovation is KSQ/Peterson of Charlotte. Rodgers Builders, also of Charlotte, is serving as construction manager.
