SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — As the weather warms up and families head to pools, lakes, and beaches, the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina is reminding the community about the importance of water safety all summer long. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause for children under 14. At the Y, we believe that access to water safety education can save lives—and we’re committed to reaching as many children and families as possible.

Schools in Pools: Partnering to Reach Students Early
One of the Y’s most impactful programs is Schools in Pools, a collaborative effort with local school systems and community partners like the YWCA Lower Cape Fear, NSEA Swim, and The Endowment. Through this initiative, elementary school students come to the YMCA during the school day to learn basic swim skills and water safety. By meeting kids where they are, the Y is ensuring that more children get the chance to learn critical lifesaving skills.

Safety Around Water: Building Skills and Confidence
The Safety Around Water program offers free or low-cost swim instruction to children who may not otherwise have access. These sessions teach essential techniques like floating, treading water, and safely exiting the pool—skills that build both confidence and competence. It’s not just about swimming; it’s about saving lives.

Swim Lessons for All Ages
Beyond specialized programs, the YMCA offers group and private swim lessons for every age and ability level. Whether it’s a toddler getting comfortable in the water or an adult learning to swim for the first time, the certified instructors are passionate about creating a safe, supportive learning environment.

Looking Ahead: The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson in June
Though May is a major focus for water safety, the commitment doesn’t end there. On June 26th, the YMCA of SENC will take part in The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, a global event aimed at raising awareness about the importance of swim education. It’s a fun, high-energy way to bring attention to a serious topic—and a reminder that learning to swim is a skill that lasts a lifetime.

At the YMCA, water safety isn’t a seasonal concern—it’s a year-round mission. Through strong partnerships, community support, and a shared belief that every child deserves to be safe in and around water, we’re making a lasting impact.
