WILMINGTON — Dr. Joseph P. Marchese, 93, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 10, 2026.
Born on May 13, 1932, in Flushing, NY, and raised in Elmhurst, he lived a life defined by education, service, faith, and devotion to family.
A graduate of Regis High School, he went on to earn his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from St. John’s University, where he met the love of his life, Matilda (“Tillie”) Daly. They married in 1957 and built a life centered on family, community, and shared purpose.
Dr. Marchese dedicated his professional life to education. He began as a teacher of English, Latin, and philosophy before serving for 27 years as Assistant Principal at Half Hollow Hills High School East. He also played a meaningful role in advancing educational standards through his work with the Middle States Association.
In retirement, he and Tillie moved to Wilmington, NC, where they remained deeply engaged in their community. He served in leadership roles within the Lions Club and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. A man of strong faith, he was an active member of the Basilica Shrine of St. Mary, serving as a Eucharistic minister and lector, and volunteering alongside his wife at the St. Isaac Center Outreach.
He found great joy in music and was a long-term supporter of the Wilmington Symphony. His commitment to the arts extended to future generations through an endowment he established for the Youth Orchestras of Fresno. He also loved to travel, especially when it meant celebrating the milestones and accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tillie; his infant daughter, Marie; and his parents, Philip and Catherine. He leaves behind a large and loving family: his seven children Philip, Catherine, Theresa, Joseph Jr., Francis, Dianne, and Andrea, 15 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, who carry forward his legacy of dedication, generosity, and love.
Online condolences may be offered here.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Youth Orchestras of Fresno or the Wilmington Lions Club (PO Box 7825, Wilmington, NC, United States, 28406).
