WILMINGTON — Mary Elizabeth Ward Amstrong, born on August 20, 1943, in Gaston County, North Carolina, left her earthly home to be with the Lord on February 10, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 82.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, who was affectionately known to her family as “grammie” and “mawmaw”. Her greatest gift was how she loved and cared for her family, as well as those whose paths she crossed that needed a hug and a prayer.
Mary moved from Gastonia to Wilmington 54 years ago with her husband and two children. She worked in a clerical position at JW Murchison for several years, then went on to support her husband in running a motorcycle repair business for over two decades. She concluded her career in the accounting department of Walmart for over two decades before retiring.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, John and Ina Ward, her son, Donald Wayne Armstrong, two brothers, David and Danny, and two sisters, JoAnn and Ruth. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald Edwin Armstrong, her son, MIchael Glenn Armstrong, her daughter Sharon Armstrong Dousharm and husband William (Bill), her two grandchildren, Rachel Dousharm, fiance’ Graham, daughter Ella, and Wm Christopher Dousharm, wife Sheena, and daughter Gracen. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Louise Denton, and many nieces and nephews.
There is no measure of the impact that Mary had on her family and those around her. Her presence will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing that she is now at peace with her Savior, Jesus Christ. We love you Momma, Grammie, Mawmaw!
Private family services will be held to honor Mary’s life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to the American Heart Association or to The National Kidney Foundation in honor of Mary. Through these generous donations, Mary’s spirit of kindness and care will carry forward and make a positive impact on those in need.
