Gerald Edward Smals, 75

HAMPSTEAD — Gerald Edward Smals, 75, of Hampstead, passed away, Monday, February 2, 2026.

He was born February 23, 1950, in Harrisonburg, VA, to the late Lewis Franklin Smals Sr. Anna Drager Smals.

Jerry grew up as an Army brat in Virginia and North Carolina, eventually moving from Fayetteville to Wilmington after graduation. He and Jane later moved from Wrightsville Beach to Hampstead, where they raised their son, Tim, alongside a motley crew of beloved animals.

Deeply involved in his community, Jerry supported local school and community sports teams throughout Tim’s youth. Following his retirement from wholesale wine sales in 2016, he dedicated his time to service, volunteering with ASP through HUMC to help rebuild homes damaged by hurricanes. Most recently, he volunteered with Church World Services, assisting immigrants as they transitioned into our society.

An avid explorer, Jerry achieved his goal of visiting all 50 states and took great joy in international travel. He is survived by Jane, his wife of 48 years; his son, Tim; his sister, Pat; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his loyal dog, Cori, and his cat, Hermione.

A service to celebrate Jerry’s life will be held at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, February 11, at Andrews Mortuary in Hampstead, NC.

In lieu of flowers please donate to the Pender County Humane Society or Hampstead United Methodist Church.
