WILMINGTON — Stephen Edward Hertling, born on July 1, 1950, in Nassau County, NY, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 75. A passionate educator and devoted musician, Stephen’s life was marked by his love of music and his dedication to teaching.
Stephen pursued his passion for music with unwavering commitment, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Music. He shared his love of music with countless students throughout his career as a music teacher, inspiring many to find their own voices and embrace the joy of musical expression.
Beyond the classroom, Stephen was a talented trumpet player and a proud member of the NH 12th Regimental Civil War Band. His performances were a testament to his skill and dedication, bringing history alive through the power of music.
In addition to his musical pursuits, Stephen was a lifelong fisherman, finding tranquility and solace on the water.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. Hertling and Lillian (nee) Marquardt, and his brother, Perer Hertling. He is survived by his sister Marilyn; sister-in-law Chester; nieces Laura and Hollye; and nephews Christopher and Collin. Stephen’s memory will be cherished by his family and friends, who will forever hold him in their hearts.
A family memorial will be held at a later date to honor Stephen’s life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Stephen’s memory to a charity of one’s choice. Stephen Edward Hertling will be remembered for his kindness, talent, and unwavering dedication to his passions.
