WILMINGTON — Jan Elizabeth Alexander, a beloved sister, aunt, and friend, passed away on September 26, 2025, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 66. Born on December 10, 1958, in Newark, OH, Jan grew up in Columbus, OH. Her life was a tapestry of love, creativity, and passion.
Jan spent her professional years contributing to the world of retail at William Sonoma in Pittsburgh, PA, and later at Trader Joe’s for three years before embracing retirement. Her work ethic and warm spirit touched many colleagues and customers alike.
Her heart found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Jan adored her French Bulldog, Evie, whose companionship brought endless smiles and love. She loved the beach, finding peace and inspiration in long walks along the shore. An avid reader and music enthusiast, Jan held a special affection for Todd Rundgren and Chris Isaak, attending concerts whenever she could.
Jan nurtured her love of learning through classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNCW, where she delighted in thought-provoking lectures and the joy of lifelong curiosity. She also found community and energy in her water aerobics classes. Her culinary skills were renowned among family and friends, as she delighted in exploring diverse cuisines. Jan had a profound appreciation for the bravery and dedication of firefighters. She was actively involved in her community as a member of the Cameron Art Museum and attended Christ Community Church.
Preceded in death by her sister Nancy, Jan leaves behind a loving family: her brothers Pete and John, sisters Lynn and Susan, and a cherished group of nieces and nephews, including Nick Van Gundy, Julian Kosanovic, Zac Collins, Chris Collins, Reese Collins, Jenny Alexander Jensen, Jared Kosanovic, and Emily Alexander. Her kindness and vibrant spirit also touched a host of extended family and friends who will remember her fondly.
Though no services are planned at this time, Jan’s memory can be honored through a memorial donation to one of the causes dear to her heart: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Fort Fisher Aquarium, or Nourish NC, in lieu of flowers.
Jan will be remembered for her zest for life, her generous spirit, and the love she shared with all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but forever celebrated.
