Daniel Gray Skinner, 78

Daniel Gray Skinner (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — Daniel Gray Skinner, affectionately known as Dannie, passed away surrounded by loved ones and family. Born on April 29, 1947, in Wilson, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Hardy Skinner and Rebecca Howell Skinner. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ann Ford Skinner, his brother Ronnie Skinner, and his step-sister Carolyn Strickland.

Dan grew up in Wilson with his older brother Ronnie. After the loss of his mother during his teenage years, his father remarried Clara Proctor, and Dan gained two step-sisters, Debra Gravitt and Carolyn Strickland, who helped spark his lifelong passion for cooking.

He attended North Carolina State University and proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years, specializing in C-130 Radar Systems. It was during this time that he met Ann on a blind date arranged by friends—an encounter that led to a loving marriage just six months later. They were married for 51 years until Ann passed away. They settled in Wilson, before moving to Raleigh, where they raised their two sons, Todd and Brad. Dan also coached them in baseball and soccer. Dan later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Atlantic Christian College, now Barton College. He became a pharmaceutical salesman for over 35 years. Dan retired in 2007.

After their sons went off to college, Dan and Ann relocated to Wilmington, NC, where they became cherished members of their community. Dan’s woodworking talents were legendary—he crafted beautiful furniture for family and friends, including treasured chests for his grandsons. His face lit up whenever he spoke about Harrison and Henry, and his stories about them were a source of joy for all who listened.

Dan’s culinary skills were equally renowned. His Boston Butts and Hunter’s sauce were staples at family gatherings, and his kitchen was always open to anyone in need of a warm meal or a good story. On a cruise with Ann, he famously gave the chef a few tips on perfecting Ossobucco—a testament to his passion and precision in the kitchen.

Known as the neighborhood’s “snake whisperer,” Dan was often called upon to identify and safely relocate snakes, a skill he honed during his college years. His love for animals extended to his toy poodle, Bo.

Dan and Ann were the heart of their Wilmington neighborhood, welcoming children with lemonade, cookies, and unconditional kindness. Many came to know them as adopted grandparents, and their home was a haven of warmth, laughter, and love.

Dan is survived by his sons Todd Skinner (Francine) of Wilmington, NC, and Brad Skinner (Monica) of Raleigh, NC; grandsons Harrison Skinner and Henry Skinner; sister Deborah Gravitt; sister-in-law Cathy Skinner; brothers-in-law Donald Ford (Katherine), Phillip Ford (Pam), and Lynn Ford (Sandi); and many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors who were blessed to know him. A special thanks to the many caregivers at Bradley Creek and especially Ci Ci from Eldercare.

Dan will be remembered for his generosity, craftsmanship, storytelling, and unwavering devotion to his family. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to be loved by him.
