WILMINGTON — Julius Ralph Merritt, a life long resident of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday August 23, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on May 28, 1942, in Wilmington, he remained at steadfast and beloved member of the community throughout his life.

Ralph was a dedicated and accomplished entrepreneur, owning and operating Merritts Crane Service in Wilmington for many years. His commitment to is work and his community was evident in every project he undertook.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Ralph served his country with honor. He enlisted on April 23, 1960 and was discharged on August 7, 1962, and subsequently continuing his service in the Army Reserves until March 31, 1968.

Ralph was also an active and respected member of several Masonic organizations. He was a member of Orient Lodge # 395 A.F. & A.M., and was a devoted member of Sudan Shriners in New Bern, NC, the Sudan Drum & Bugle Corps in Wilmington, NC and the Wilmington Shrine Club. He served as a Faithful Mason for 43 years. His contributions to these organizations were numerous, and he was admired by his Masonic and Shrine brothers for his dedication, support, and camaraderie.

Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, Julius Ralph Merritt and Dorothy Reeves Merritt; his first wife, Rosemary Carroll Merritt, and his son Nathan Merritt.

Ralph leaves behind a loving family to cherish his memory, including his wife of 18 years, Rebecca Robinson Williams Merritt, and his two grandchildren, Thaddeus Gene Merritt and Brittany Michelle Merritt; brother Jerry Calvert and sister Priscilla Bordeaux; his extended family to include sons, John Williams and wife Sharon, and Michael Collum; grandchildren Cassidy Williams Langley (Nick), Kensie Williams, and his great granddaughter Teagan Langley. And his special pet Chihuahua “Bubba Skinnner”.

He will be fondly remembered by his many Mason and Shrine brothers and friends.

A Memorial Service to celebration Ralph’s life will be held 2 pm Friday, August 29, 2025 at the Wilmington Funeral Chapel led by Rev. Wayne Holly. Masonic Funeral Honors will be accorded by Orient Lodge # 319 A.F. & A.M. US Army Flag presentation will be led by the US Army Honor Guard.
