WILMINGTON — Fredrick Michael Gainey, 66, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday August 4, 2025.
Born in Spokane, Washington on March 2, 1959, Fred spent his early years living the military family life on the west coast. At the time, his father Archie was an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at a few different bases in Washington and California. Around the age of 12, his family found their way to North Carolina where they lived for the remainder of their lives.
Fred began his career with the New Hanover Volunteer Rescue Squad, where he developed a deep commitment to public safety and helping others. He went on to serve more than 20 years with the Wilmington Fire Department, where he was a dedicated member of both the dive and hazardous materials (hazmat) teams. His hard work, bravery, and commitment to his fellow firefighters and community earned him the respect and admiration of many.
Following his retirement from the fire department, Fred began a successful second career in real estate. He remained an active and engaged member of the Wilmington community, serving on numerous boards and committees while continuing to make a positive impact in the lives of those around him.
Fred is survived by his children: Michael (Krystal), Jennifer (Brandon), and Travis (Stephanie); and by his beloved grandchildren: John, Anna, Travis, Brittney, Jacob, Vincent, Owen, and Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Eloyce Gainey, and his sister, Donna Rae Brooks.
A memorial service to celebrate Fred’s life will be held 4 PM Friday August 22, 2025 at Silver Lake Baptist Church. The family will greet friends following the service.
Fred will be remembered for his kindness, quick wit, and unwavering work ethic. He had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued and was truly a friend to all who knew him. His legacy of compassion, humor, and service will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
He will be deeply missed by all of his family and friends.
