WILMINGTON — Joyce Humphrey Cares, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 85. Born on January 30, 1940, in Plainfield, New Jersey, Joyce lived a life dedicated to caring for others and pursuing her passions with grace and joy.

A devoted nurse and a nurturing educator, Joyce spent many years teaching nursing, imparting her vast knowledge and compassion to countless students. Her dedication to her profession was matched only by her love for writing. As an accomplished author, she delighted in crafting both romance novels and children’s books, leaving behind a legacy of imagination and love for the written word. Joyce was an active member of the Writer’s Group in Wilmington, where she found great joy in sharing her literary talents with fellow enthusiasts.

Joyce’s creative spirit extended beyond writing; she loved knitting and had a particular fondness for constructing intricate dollhouses, which brought her much happiness and relaxation throughout her life.

She valued community and connection, enjoying the vibrant surroundings of Chapel Hill and Wilmington, places she called home later in life. Joyce was also a proud member of the Jama Phi Beata Sorority with the University of Syracuse in New York, a testament to her lifelong commitment to learning and service.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Norwood Daniel Humphrey and Ruth Woodcock Humphrey. She is survived by her loving children, Eric Cares, Mark Cares, and Lionel Cares; her dear sister, Karen French; her cherished grandson, Wyatt Cares; and her special companion, her pet Ling-Ling. Joyce will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
