WILMINGTON — Gary Wayne Powell, age 71 passed away unexpectedly on July 19th. A native of Wilmington, NC he had resided in Transylvania County for the past 16 years.
Gary worked in the automotive repair business for over 40 years. He worked at Mike’s Body & Frame in Wilmington, NC, Myers’ Body Shop in Brevard, NC and recently retired from First aid Collision Center in Penrose, NC. He was a member of Dunn’s Rock Baptist Church.
Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Lehrschall Powell, brothers Joe and Terry Powell and his stepdaughter, Crissy Wilson Garst.
Gary is survived by his loving wife Myra Kay Peterson Powell of the home. His father, Brinston Powell of Wilmington, NC, sisters Connie Powell Young of Lumberton, NC and Debbie McKee of Leland, NC.
Gary is also survived by his children, Amber Powell Wilson and husband Brian of Rose Hill, NC, Blair Powell Davis and husband John of Wallace, NC, Jessica Powell Plummer and husband Kenny of Goldsboro, NC, son Christopher Wayne Powell of Goldsboro, NC, his step-children, Lee Faircloth and wife, Jennifer of Riegelwood, NC, Jamie Wilson and wife, Brooke of Pisgah Forest, NC, Missy Shipman and husband, Luther of Pisgah Forest, NC. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 5 great-granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Anthony Fisher, Melissa Arnold, NP-C and the entire staff at Blue Mountain Medicine in Brevard, NC for their love and care given to Gary through the years.
A Celebration of Life service for Gary will be held at 11 am on Saturday, August 23rd at Moody Connolly in Brevard, NC with Pastor Todd Alewine and Pastor Kelvin Mosely officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to Dunn’s Rock Baptist Church, PO Box 108 Brevard, NC 28712.
