Carolyn Kay Hewett Hinton, 89

Carolyn Kay Hewett Hinton (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — Carolyn Kay Hewett Hinton, 89, of Wilmington, went to be with her Lord and Savior on June 25th, 2025.

Kay, as she was affectionately known to her friends and family, was born on March 11th, 1936, in Wilmington to Hiram B. and Eunice Woodcock Hewett.

The remaining survivor of nine children, Kay spent most of her childhood in rural Brunswick County, and always had an abundance of warm memories and stories about the family’s daily life tending their garden, fishing, working hard, and the strong bond of togetherness they shared.

Kay married Harry Bergmann (deceased), in 1953 and they shared three sons.

In 1975, she married Jim Hinton of Wilmington, NC (deceased), and they blended Kay’s two surviving children, and Jim’s six children into a busy household, where there was never a dull moment, and always plenty to do.

Kay worked for several notable employers in Wilmington throughout her career, including MacMillan & Cameron, Kaiser Chemical Corporation, and Corning, Inc., where her strong sense of organizational and communication skills made her a resourceful asset. She retired from Corning in 1999, at which time she and Jim moved to Boiling Spring Lakes where they built their dream home and once again took on a full house, this time consisting of their beloved furry children – Heather, Stetson, Princess and Patience, who Kay knew were waiting for her at Rainbow Bridge.

Kay was a devoted servant of Christ. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport, where she also sang in the choir. Her deep love of traditional hymns began in her childhood and comforted her for the span of her life. She will be remembered for her wisdom, kindness, and thoughtful spirit. Her life was a beautiful testimony to faith, family, and quiet strength. Though our hearts ache with her passing, we rejoice in knowing that she is healed and in the presence of the Lord.

She is survived by her two sons, David (Kathleen) and Donald (Sheryl) Bergmann; two stepdaughters Debra (Gary) McGee and Jan (Phyllis) Hinton; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kay is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim Hinton; her beloved son Douglas Keith Bergmann; four sisters and four brothers.

A celebration of her life will be held at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 South College Rd. in Wilmington on Saturday, July 26th, 2025. Visitation will be from 2:00-2:45 PM, followed by a service at 3:00 PM at the Valley Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Kay to: Adopt an ANGEL, P.O. Box 15095, Wilmington, NC 28408 or Paws Place Dog Rescue, P.O. Box 67, Winnabow, NC 28479.
