WILMINGTON — Mr. Leonard Wright age 80 of Wilmington passed away on Saturday June 21, 2025 at the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Lifecare in Wilmington, NC.

Mr. Leonard Dale Wright was born in Thomasville, NC, on 19 February 1945. In 1960, he met his high school sweetheart, Elena (Marchacos) Sweeney, in 9th grade at the Army dependent Junior High in Neu Ulm, Germany. They married in Ft. Bragg, NC, in May, 1965.

Mr. Wright leaves behind his wife of 60 years and three wonderful daughters, Andrea Rogers (Kenneth), Cynthia Bowers (Bradley), and Laura Seyler (Andrew). He is also survived by three grandchildren, Elliot Rogers, Andrew Rogers (Lauren), and Anna Eakins (Jerik), and one great-granddaughter, Serafina Rogers.

Mr. Wright had two wonderful careers as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the US Army and as a civilian expert in transportation logistics and automation for the US Army. He enlisted in the US Army in 1963 and served more than 20 years until his retirement in July 1984.

He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and served in numerous assignments in the transportation field both in the United States and overseas in Germany, Greece and Viet Nam. Mr. Wright was the Honor Graduate in the Non-Commissioned Officers Course. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Joint Service commendations Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal (6 th Award), Viet Nam Service Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm Leaf, and NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3).

In his 11th year civilian career working for the Army, he was inducted into the United States Army Transportation Corps, received four Official Commendations, and the Meritorious Civilians service Award.

A private burial and celebration of life will be held.
