HAMPSTEAD — Robert Alan Jennings, “Smoke”, of Holly Ridge, NC, died Monday, June 2, 2025, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

In the 70 years Robert “Smoke” lived he was so many things to so many people. A loving husband, father, papa, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. It is always said you might not have liked him at first, but in the end everyone always ended up loving him. He had a heart of gold, and was a big softy, even though everyone always considered him the tough guy. He was always the first one in and the last one out.

He was a Kentucky boy through and through, picking tobacco and raising mules in the family farm before joining the army. In his 28.5 years of service he traveled the world, including tours of duty in Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. He earned numerous commendations for his service, leadership and bravery, including the bronze star. He was known for his dedication, courage and resilience. His commitment to his country was unwavering, and he left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

In his retirement he enjoying fishing, shooting, and being a papa. He enjoyed sharing stories and knowledge with everyone he met. His favorite past time was to teach his granddaughter Hadley all his army cadences, including “When Old Granny.”

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Sandra “Blondie” Jennings; his children Jennifer, Robert, Eric, Michael Ryan, Chris and Michael Allen; his grandchildren Hadley, Zaylee, Baylee, Brooke, Luna, Olivia, Logan, Chloe, and Pilot; and his sisters Karen and Gilda. He is preceded in death by his mother, Harriet, and father Gilbert.

His legacy of service, love, and dedication will forever be cherished by family and friends. It’s not goodbye, but simply see you later until we meet again.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, June 9, 2025, at Andrews Mortuary Hampstead Chapel. Burial will follow at 2:00 pm in Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, NC.
