Janise Lee Gates, 55

Janise Lee Gates (Coastal Cremations and Funeral Care)

WILMINGTON — It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Janise (Bishop) Gates, of Hubert, who passed away on May 24, 2025, at the age of 55. Born on February 16, 1970 in Charlotte, NC; she passed away peacefully at Novant Health-Wilmington. Janise’s life was a tapestry woven with love, laughter, and a touch of her unique wisdom.

Janise’s professional journey included working at the mess hall on Camp Geiger military base and Jordan’s Smokehouse, where her dedication and warmth left a lasting impression on colleagues and patrons alike.

Janise was a woman of many talents, not least of which was her ability to whip up a meal that would disappear faster than you could say “seconds, please;” and unfortunately, leftovers were scarce.

Her home was a place of warmth and welcome as family was at the heart of Janise’s life. Sundays were reserved for her loved ones, engaging in “Sunday, Funday” which were filled with laughter and friendly competition over an assortment of board games. She also found joy in the simple pleasures of life—coloring, doing puzzles, and watching cartoons with her beloved grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving mother, Nancy Bishop; her daughters, whom she adored beyond measure: Ivy Rose Halloran of Fredericksburg, VA; Kanna Leigh Hobbs of Anchorage, Alaska; and Erica Shay Hobbs with whom she lived with. She also leaves behind her cherished granddaughter, Sapphira Fiona Bright, and grandson, Glenn Ray Durham. Janise will be fondly remembered by her best friends, Brian James Zera and Lydia Schneider.

Janise was “everybody’s mom.” Her advice was always sage, her generosity boundless, and her heart open to all, as she was non-judgmental towards everyone. She had a candid ability to be blunt yet caring, stern yet loving.

She will be remembered most for her straightforward nature- never one to sugarcoat anything except desserts in the kitchen. She always had something to say, and it was often exactly what one needed to hear leaving you both laughing and thinking.

A celebration of Janise’s life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced by the family. In the meantime, those who knew her are encouraged to remember her wit, her wisdom, and her unwavering love for her family and friends. Janise Gates may have left this world, but her words and spirit will echo in our hearts forever.
