Steven Shrum (Coastal Cremations and Funeral Care)

WILMINGTON — Steven R. Shrum, aged 63, peacefully passed away on May 16, 2025, at Novant Health hospital in Wilmington, North Carolina.

He was born on December 4, 1961, in Coalmont, Tennessee, to Lee Roy and Annie Mae (Green) Shrum. Steve graduated from Scottsdale High School in 1980. Following his graduation, he attended the Air Force Training Academy for Jet Engine Mechanics and served with the United States Air Force Reserves until 1988. During his service, he traveled to Japan, the Philippines, and Alaska.

After his military service, Steve married Dustie (Cook) Shrum at a civil ceremony in Ahwatukee, Arizona; they were happily married for nearly 35 years. His son Joshua was his inspiration and the light of his life throughout his illness.

Steve had a passion for fishing, camping, photography, and restoring old furniture. He also cherished his pet hens—Beatrice, Ethel, Florence, and Gertrude—who enjoyed sitting on his lap for cuddles. Steve’s love for animals extended especially to his dogs.

Above all, Steve valued spending time with his family and friends. He held his brothers in high regard and entertained his friends with his storytelling and humor. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of football, supporting the Dallas Cowboys, and basketball, as a loyal Phoenix Suns fan.

He is predeceased by his parents, Lee Roy and Annie Mae Shrum.

He is survived by his wife, Dustie (Cook) Shrum; his son, Joshua Shrum; his brothers Don Shrum (Kim), Mike Shrum (Shelley), and Jeff Shrum (Becky); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Per Steve’s wishes, multiple memorial services will be held, as he desired to be cremated and have his ashes scattered in various locations across the United States, with his final resting place next to his parents in Tracy City, Tennessee.

Those who wish to honor Steve may make donations to the following fundraiser for funeral expenses.
