SOUTHPORT — James Anthony Fania, Sr., a man whose hands could transform wood into art and whose heart embraced those around him with warmth and kindness, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, in Southport, NC, at the age of 84. Born on August 31, 1940, in Plainfield, NJ, James lived a life rich with purpose, passion, and dedication.

From an early age, James demonstrated an innate ability to understand and master the mechanics of the world around him. He honed these skills over many years as a machinist at Scotts, where he was known not only for his perfectionist nature but also for his unwavering commitment to excellence. He will be remembered as a man who could fix anything, be it made of wood or steel. In 1980 James began a new chapter, a second career with Prudential Insurance where he worked until retirement.

In 2015, James and his beloved wife, Sara, embraced a new chapter by moving from New Jersey to the serene coastal town of Southport, NC. Here, James continued to indulge his love for woodworking, often seen crafting intricate pieces in his workshop with the same meticulous care that defined his life’s work.

A man of faith, James was a cherished member of the New Creations Worship Center in Boiling Spring Lakes, NC. His community knew him as a generous soul, always ready with a smile and a story, often shared over a good cigar.

James’s love for the New York Giants was legendary among friends and family. He played semi-pro football as a formidable fullback with the Crusaders. He was a 1959 high school graduate, Plainfield High School, where he played football and earned a place in the schools athletic Hall of Fame, a testament to his dedication and athleticism.

Preceded in death by his dear sister, Carol George, James leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in his surviving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Sara; his children, Lisa Stettner (Eric) of Southport, NC, James A. Fania, Jr. (Karen) of Southport, NC, and Natalie Weyrauch (Bill) of Connecticut; as well as his sister, Philomena Wood of NJ; along with 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Though his earthly journey has ended, James’s spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. His life was a testament to the power of hard work, faith, and family. A private family service will be held at a later date to honor his memory.

James Anthony Fania, Sr. was a man who inspired others to strive for perfection and to cherish every moment with loved ones. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

In lieu of flowers donations in James’ honor may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice or the Wounded Warrior Project.
