LELAND — Vernon Ray Billinger, born May 17, 1945, in Garden City, Kansas, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2025, in Leland, North Carolina, at the age of 79.

Vernon was a retired meat cutter, dedicating many years to his craft with diligence and pride. He was a kind and loving man who found joy in life’s simple pleasures. With a warm and welcoming spirit, he had the remarkable ability to make those around him feel like family. He cherished his wife, Ethel, above all, especially appreciating her cooking and baking—particularly her famous oatmeal cookies.

A natural storyteller, Vernon never missed an opportunity to share tales of his upbringing, filling every conversation with warmth and humor. A devoted baseball fan, he found joy both on the field and in the stands, sharing his love for the game with others. He also had a fondness for classic Western films and was always ready to dance to Mexican music at family gatherings.

Above all, Vernon treasured his time with family, finding his greatest happiness in the love and laughter they shared. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, joy, and cherished memories will live on.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Aloysius and Rosella Billinger, and his siblings, Aloysius Jr., James, Marilyn, and Betty. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ethel Billinger, his son Vernon Billinger, Jr., and his brothers Anthony and Joe Billinger. He also leaves behind grandchildren Brenden (Rebekah) Billinger, Angelina (Ryan) Willbanks, Justin (Amy) Billinger, and Audrianna Billinger, as well as great-grandchildren Lyla, Audrey, Dahlia Billinger, and Jordan and Bryant Ruiz.

In addition, Vernon is survived by extended family members including sons Mark and Jake De Leon, daughter Danette Juister, grandchildren Tara, Mark, Austin, Andrea, Angelina, Aliyah, and Olivia, and great-grandchildren Avery, Oliver, Brooke, Leah, Bodhi, and Piper.

Services will be announced at a later date and will be held in Denver, Colorado. Vernon’s family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and the wonderful memories they shared together.
