CASTLE HAYNE — Yvonne “Von” Higley Barber, 92, of Castle Hayne, North Carolina, passed away on February 10, 2025.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Smith Barber; her parents, Gilbert and Dola Higley; her son, David Barber; her sister, Fran Collins and grandson, Ryan.
She is survived by her brothers, Ronnie Freeman and Gilbert Higley (wife, Shelby) of Lumberton, NC.
Von will be lovingly remembered by her children: Terry Barber, Sandy Auten (John dec.), Smitty Barber, Cindy Barber, Betsy Hendrix, and Gail Benton, along with Steve and Debbie Sczerbiak.
Her memory will also be cherished by her ten grandchildren: Von Cranford (Russ), Ladonna Rhoad (Jason), Barbie Lyles (Tripp), Matthew Gitzinger (Kate), Nathan Gitzinger (Emmie), David Barber, Ashley Weeks (Josh), Shane Barber (Mallory), Michael Hendrix, and Josh Hendrix (Liz) as well as her 25 great-grandchildren.
Von had a deep love for gardening and found great joy in nurturing both plants and the relationships she held dear. Her kindness and gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew her.
A private visitation for family will be held at Andrews Hampstead Chapel on February 15 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at Sea Lawn Memorial Park, Hampstead, NC, with Rev. Leslie Sessoms (her niece) officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in her honor.
She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those whose lives she touched.
