WILMINGTON — Helen Elizabeth Bryan (Liz), beloved mother, sister, friend and neighbor passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025 in Wilmington, North Carolina, after living a life fully devoted to her family and friends.
She was born on August 25, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, to Alfred H. Walchen and Mary Ellen Walchen. The family later moved to Westfield, New Jersey, where she lived until attending Duke University in 1959, where she graduated with a BA in Psychology.
While attending Duke University she met the love of her life and married John Rupert Bryan, Jr. on October 4, 1963. Soon after starting their life together, Rupert joined the Navy taking them to Rhode Island, California, Washington, Boston, Maine, Florida and finally returning to North Carolina.
Liz was predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her brothers, Al Walchen (Lucy) of Milford, NJ and Robert Walchen (Karen) of Fort Collins, CO., and three sons: John Rupert Bryan III of Charlotte, NC, Robert Jefferson Bryan (Joy) of Wallace, NC and Rodger Wilson Bryan (Susannah) of Guilford, CT. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren: Sarah Kathryn, Matthew, Kayla, Hannah, Natalie and Carter. She had many close friends and neighbors who were near and dear to heart. Her constant companion was her beloved poodle, Benny.
Liz enjoyed being an active member of The Church of the Servant since its founding. She worked for many years at GE and upon retirement, she discovered a love for pottery, gardening, and bird watching. She had a close sisterhood with the members of her book club and EFM group.
