HAMPSTEAD — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Lee Sherman, beloved husband, brother and friend. Bob was 79 and passed away peacefully at his home in Hampstead, North Carolina on February 7, 2025.
Born in Tacoma, Washington on October 11, 1945, Bob was a proud graduate of the University of Washington, where he earned his undergraduate degree and Doctorate in Dentistry in 1970. Shortly thereafter, he was commissioned into the United States Navy, where he served with distinction in various locations, including California, Southeast Asia, Washington D.C., Japan, and finally with the Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, where he retired in 1989.
Dr. Sherman completed his residency in Endodontics at the Naval Postgraduate Dental Schoolin 1979 and went on to become Board Certified in 1985. After retiring from the Navy, he dedicated his career to serving the Jacksonville, NC community as an endodontist for 36 years. He was a passionate advocate for organized dentistry and served in leadership roles with the Onslow County Dental Societyand the North Carolina Endodontic Society. Bob was also a lifetime member of the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontics, and the Southern Endodontic Study Group, and was inducted into prestigious organizations including the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Cosmos Society of Washington D.C. He was honored as an honorary alumnus of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1997.
Those who knew Bob, knew his enthusiastic attitude toward life, his kindness, his laughter and his caring spirit. A man of many passions, Bob loved learning and was always eager to meet new people. He enjoyed traveling the world, shopping for unique treasures, caring for his many dogs throughout the years and sharing his joy with those around him. He had a deep appreciation for life’s little moments, which he cherished with his loving wife, Lucy Dadourion Sherman, who stood by his side for 49 years.
Bob’s legacy will live on through his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, and many extended family members, all of whom will miss his warmth, wit, and unwavering kindness.
The Funeral Service is scheduled for 2:00PM Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Andrews Market Street Chapel, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.
