SOUTHPORT — Dr. James Albert Sutherland, Jr., a devoted physician, loving family man, and respected member of his community, passed away on February 10, 2025 at the age of 77.

Born on December 22, 1947, Jim grew up with a passion for learning and excellence. He graduated as valedictorian of his high school class in 1966 while also demonstrating his athletic talent in golf and basketball. He continued his education at Vanderbilt University, earning his undergraduate degree in 1970, before pursuing his medical degree at the University of Kentucky, where he graduated in 1975.

Following medical school, Dr. Sutherland completed his residency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1979. His dedication to women’s health led him to serve as a faculty member at the University College of Medicine in the Department of OB/GYN from 1979 to 1980 at the University of Kentucky.

In 1980, Dr. Sutherland transitioned to private practice in Whiteville, North Carolina, where he dedicated his life to caring for his patients and supporting the community. Known for his compassionate approach and unwavering commitment to his profession, he became a trusted and beloved physician who positively impacted countless lives.

In 1987, he and his family moved to Marietta, Georgia where he continued his medical practice until his retirement in 2013 at which time he moved to Southport, North Carolina.

Beyond medicine, Jim found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether on the front porch, philosophizing about life, or spending time with family and friends, he lived with warmth and kindness. His intellect, humor, and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Jim is survived by his wife, Sheryl Sutherland; three children, Kara McPherson and husband Jesse, Zac Sutherland, and Jordan Sutherland and wife Megumi; five grandchildren, Millie McPherson, Porter McPherson, Clara McPherson, Maia Sutherland, and Soma Sutherland; two sisters, Dr. Ellen Freeman and her husband Jim, and Anne Herndon and husband Gayle; who will cherish his memory.

A service to celebrate Dr. Sutherland’s life will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Southport on Saturday, February 22nd at 11:00 am with family and friends gathering to honor a life well lived.
