William “Bill” Gallagher, 77

William “Bill” Gallagher (Coastal Cremations and Funeral Care)

WILMINGTON — William “Bill” Lawrence Gallagher, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Sneads Ferry, NC on December 27, 2024, at the age of 77.

He was born on October 25, 1947, in Philadelphia, PA to the late William L. Gallagher, Sr. and Dolores (Wittman) Gallagher. Bill lived a life rich with laughter, love, fishing and all things Philadelphia.

After graduating from Roxborough High School in 1965, Bill worked for a time at Penn Reel where he was asked to be a mate on the Miss Penn Reel just prior to joining the United States Air Force in 1969. Bill went on to work for the Philadelphia Electric Company for over 25 years, retiring as a Foreman in the Gas Distribution division. Bill’s colleagues remember him fondly as “one of the funniest guys” they knew who always had them laughing. Bill was very proud of his time at PECO and the men he worked with.

An avid saltwater fisherman, Bill had plenty of adventures and plenty of stories to tell, including days-long trips off of Stellwagen Bank fishing for tuna, shark fishing in tournaments out of New Jersey and catching rooster fish in Costa Rica. He spent lots of time in the Florida Keys and moved to Florida and finally North Carolina to pursue his passion. Growing massive vegetable gardens and curating the perfect Doo-Wop playlists also kept him busy in his retirement, all while enjoying a Coors Original Banquet beer.

A true Philadelphian at heart, Bill’s enthusiasm for the Philadelphia Eagles was matched only by his appreciation for an authentic Philadelphia cheesesteak — no other compared. His infectious smile, hearty laugh, and ability to find humor in any situation made him a cherished companion to all who knew him. His pride in his son Billy and his love for his beloved daughter, Stacy knew no bounds. He also loved his furry friends, especially Zachary, Rocky, Johnny and Buddy.

Bill is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Nancy J. Parsons; his children, Stacy Gallagher of Punta Gorda, FL, William Gallagher III (Jenn) of Ft. Washington, PA, and Jeffrey Gallagher of Philadelphia, PA; his grandchildren, Jarred, Jenna, Nicholas, and Jordan Gallagher; and great-grandchildren, Ava, Ellie, Amelia, and Kayden. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Gallagher (Marty) of Boyertown, PA, his niece, Tara Gallagher Kowalczyk, and nephew, Sean Gallagher.

Having lived in Port Charlotte, FL, and Philadelphia, PA, Bill always considered Philadelphia his true home, where he formed countless memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held in Philadelphia at a later date, and his ashes will be scattered from Marathon Key, FL, where he will find the warmth and peace among the turquoise waters he so longed for.

Bill’s legacy is one of joy, resilience, and unwavering love for his family and friends. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
