WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH — Roland Shouse Carroll passed away December 6th after a short illness.
He was born May 19, 1952, in Opa-locka, Florida, where his father was stationed for the Marine Corps. He spent his youth living in various cities in the United States with his parents as they moved for the Marine Corps finally settling in Winston-Salem, which was home to both of his parents.
He graduated from North Forsyth High School in 1970. After high school he attended Wingate College and transferred to Appalachian State University where he graduated in 1975 and met his loving wife of 48 years. Roland spent most of his career as a corporate pilot for fixed wing air ambulance services and for NASCAR teams. Throughout the years Roland developed a love for music, surfing, and snow skiing. His last years were spent playing music with a local band, surfing as much as possible, skiing instructing at Beech Mountain, traveling, spending time with his wife, sons, and extended family members.
One can always tell the truth of someone’s heart by the way they treat animals. Roland had multiple dogs throughout his life which he always fed right from the table. This habit has been passed down to his children and grandchildren. It did not end with animals. If someone needed assistance Roland always extended a helping hand, partnered with good advice. His style of impatient patience was effective at keeping his family together and well taken care of.
Left behind with the wonderful memories of his gentle loving heart and soul are his wife Elizabeth (Beth), sons, Spencer, Andrew, Mack and Mack’s wife Sara, two granddaughters, Mackenzie and Payton, a sister Robin and her husband Barry.
A celebration of life will be held in Beech Mountain, December 27 and in Wilmington at a later date. Memorials may be made in Roland’s memory to Wrightsville Beach Longboard Association, PO Box 541, Wrightsville Beach, NC 28480 or Ocean Cure, 607 N. Lake Park Blvd, Carolina Beach, NC 28428.
