WILMINGTON — On October 11, 2024, Patricia Hanes Meyer, mother, sister and loving grandmother, passed away at age 77 in Wilmington, NC.
To know Patricia, would be to know her incredible kindness and ability to connect with everyone in her life. She spent her time making others feel special and valued. Patricia had a deep faith in Christ and loved being a part of her Christ Our Hope church. Patricia walked through life with classical music on, windows open, surrounded by books and her cherished family. She loved animals, nature, watching football and bantering with friends and family.
Patricia was born on February 10, 1947 and raised in her beloved Urbana, Illinois by her parents Kathryn and Walter Hanes and her older brother Robert. Patricia attended Urbana High school and graduated from Carroll College in Waukesha Wisconsin, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1969. Patricia continued her education by earning a Master of Social Work degree from Catholic University in 1976.
While at Carroll College, she met her future husband, Scott Meyer. Scott and Pat were married in June, 1969 and remained so for 42 Years. They raised three children together, Jennifer, Claire and John. Patricia was a devoted and active mother and believed that raising her children was the greatest privilege of her life.
Patricia spent over 40 years contributing to the betterment of individuals and families. She did this through running her private practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, publishing multiple textbook chapters and authoring numerous articles. Patricia spent almost a decade as a clinical instructor at Georgetown University, something she was deeply proud of.
Patricia believed in being a contributor to her friends, family and community. She spent over a decade as a Girl Scout leader and coaching women’s soccer. She finished her coaching career as the head coach of the Chantilly High School Women’s JV team.
Most importantly, Patricia loved her family, her friends, her grandchildren, and her pets. Patricia gave herself to anyone who needed a kind word or a gentle hug. She carried with her the devotion to take care of the people in her world, remembering significant parts of their lives, personal challenges, and knowing exactly what they needed to feel loved. This devotion went beyond humans, as she cared as much for her pets and wildlife as she did anything else.
