WILMINGTON — Mary Mintz Gough (born 4/7/25) died peacefully on June 28, 2024 at the age of 99.
She was born in Wilmington, living here until she married her husband, Richard I Gough, Sr. in 1946. Soon afterwards they relocated to Weymouth, MA where they remained until 2001 when they returned to Wilmington after Dick’s retirement from Prudential Insurance. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Wilmington.
In 1951 the couple welcomed their only child, Richard I. Gough, Jr. He and his father predeceased Mary as did all of her siblings- James, John and Victor Mintz and sister, Lois Mintz Johnson. Lois’ daughter, Nancy Johnson Dewhirst of Chapel Hill, NC, provided support and care to Mary during the last two years of her life.
She is survived by nephews and nieces from the Boston, MA area as well as her niece Nancy Dewhirst (Mark), great nephew Forrest Smith (Brecken) and great-great niece Loulie Smith of Williamsburg, VA.
Funeral Services will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401 or online at lifecare.org. The Lower Cape Fear Life Care’s assistance was invaluable during the last few months of her life. The care that the staff at The Kempton at Brightmore gave Mary is also highly appreciated.
Mary lived her 99 years feeling “blessed” as she often expressed. She never missed thanking people for helping her, visiting her and calling her. She was gracious until the end, thanking her caregiver shortly before she died.
