WILMINGTON — Walter James Breese passed away April 6, 2024.

He was born February 20, 1968, in Wilmington, NC to the late James Russell Breese and Yuuko H. Breese.

Walt was preceded in death by his father and his younger brother, James D. Breese.

Survivors include his mother; his son, Rylan Breese; his sister, Lisa M. Owens; nieces Brittney and Marissa; nephews, Brendin, Caleb and Zio; his best friend and caretaker, Kenny Shoulars; along with hundreds of friends near and far.

An Army brat, Walt traveled with his family to locations around the world including Fayetteville, NC, Texas, Kansas, Japan and Hawaii, before returning to Wilmington to finish his education at New Hanover High School. An accomplished musician, Walt’s rock bands Tracii’s Grind and Corruption were regular performers at the iconic Mad Monk and other music venues along the east coast.

Other pursuits included a late-night gig as a DJ for Metal Rocks Radio, broadcasting to a global fan base. Along with Kenny Shoulars, Walt also operated two bowling pro shops in Wilmington and Shallotte, NC. As one of the most accomplished bowlers in this region, Walt won several tournaments and was a two-time National Amateur Bowling (NABI) Champion.

For six years, Walt battled Laryngeal cancer and demonstrated what being strong and resilient truly means. His doctors and nurses were struck by his positivity, great sense of humor, his magnetic personality, and he will be deeply missed.
