WILMINGTON — Gary Wayne Hamm, age 72 went to be with his Savior on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. Gary was born in Wilmington, NC on March 5, 1950. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Marie, his mother, Gracie Rogers Hamm, his father, Richard Atlas Hamm and brother Glen Randolph (Randy) Hamm.
Gary is survived by his wife of 54 years Sophia Cribb Hamm, daughter Jennifer Hamm Karangelen, son-in-law James (Jay) Karangelen Chambers, two grandchildren, Brittany Joann Karangelen, Haley Nicole Karangelen and one great granddaughter, Emberly Jade Norris. He is also survived by his sister, Janet Nola Hamm Ammons.
Gary was a graduate of the New Hanover High School class of 1968. He helped organize six class reunions and the 60th birthday party for the class of 1968. He was one of the original members of the New Hanover High School Alumni Organization. Gary was also co-founder of the Miljo Breakfast Club. He served in the U.S. Army from 1969 through 1972, serving in Vietnam.
Gary was an avid car and truck builder and a collector of many rare car parts, which was his passion. He helped many car builders in Wilmington and surrounding areas and was always happy to share his knowledge.
Gary wanted to be sure a special thank you was given to Jeremy Martin, who saved Gary’s life on May 9, 2017. Jeremy gave Gary five more years of life with his family and friends. Jeremy will always hold a special place in the hearts of Sophia, Jennifer, Jay, Brittany, Haley and Emberly.
Visitation will be held at Andrews Mortuary on Market Street, Monday, December 19 at 2 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. following the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center.
