Elizabeth Cardwell Marye Emerson, 93

WILMINGTON — Elizabeth Cardwell Marye Emerson passed away on 27 Jan 2022 at Heritage House in Vicksburg Mississippi, at the age of 93. She was born in Richmond, Va. on July 18, 1928.

She was the daughter of Elise Rosser Cardwell Marye and Robert Waller Marye of Ashland, Va. She lived most of her young life in Wilmington, NC. After high school, she attended Stratford College in Danville Va. where she was Valedictorian and Vice President of the Student Council. In 1949, she graduated with a degree in Political Science from Randolph Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Va. She was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority.

In June of 1951 in Augusta, Georgia, she married Haywood Clark Emerson, having met him during her days in Wilmington. They soon moved to Vicksburg, Ms. where she spent the majority of her adult life. During her first stint in Vicksburg, she served as President of the Junior Auxiliary as well as Miss Mississippi Pageant Hostess. Also while in Vicksburg, she had 3 sons and attended the Church of the Holy Trinity. Her husband’s work would move the family to Virginia and Tennessee, but they eventually found their way back to Vicksburg in 1976. During her second stint in Vicksburg, she worked as the Director of the Ambassador’s Club of First National Bank, and continued her worship at the church.

In 1998, the couple moved to Marietta Ga, to be closer to family. After her husband passed away in 2007 from Parkinson Disease, she moved to Atlanta Ga. Later as her health began to fail in 2014, the family decided to move her back to Vicksburg to Belmont Gardens where she would be near her youngest son and lifelong friends. She remained at Belmont Gardens until November 2021 at which point she moved to Heritage House.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father – Elise and Robert Marye, and her husband Haywood Clark Emerson. She is survived by her 3 sons:  Haywood Clark Emerson, Atlanta Ga; Robert Marye Emerson (Susan) of Richmond Va; and William Cardwell Emerson (Teresa) of Vicksburg.

She will be buried next to her husband in Wilmington, NC.  Memorials may be made to the St. James Parish Foundation, 25 S. Third St., Wilmington, NC 28401;  or a favorite charity.
