PINK HILL — Pastor Ted Allen Mercer, 63, formerly of Burgaw, beloved husband, daddy, granddaddy, brother and friend, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Saturday, June 12, 2021.
He was born Oct. 7, 1957, in Norfolk, Virginia, the son of Norwood Oscar and Jessie Miller Mercer. Ted was also preceded in death by his daughter, April Johnson; two infant grandchildren; granddaughter, Raelle Jones; and sister, Hilda Jones, and her husband, Edward.
Ted is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Barbara Jones Mercer; children, Katlyn Gaskins (Thomas), Lora Futral (Josh), Eric Jones (Josie), William Jones (Katie), Jonathan “John Boy” Mercer, Chris Barbour (Michelle), Brandie Anderson and Crystal Hornbeck; 22 grandchildren, including Aaron, Noah, Abigail, Hannah, Dailynn, Harley and Carol; five great-grandchildren; sister, Teresa Miller (Milton); brother, Jonathan Mercer (Tracy); and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
For many years, Ted served as pastor of Gateway Community Church, where he not only shared his love of Christ and the Bible, but also promoted the church’s food ministry program. He was a man of God and truly lived a life that he preached. Ted loved the Lord, his family and his fellowman. Ted’s life was cut short, but he leaves a legacy of God’s love, the importance of family, and the goodness of serving others. Ted’s presence in his family circle, his church family and in the community he lived will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 16, at Gateway Community Church Family Life Center. Pastors Randy Carter, Charles Heath, Juanita Hollowell and Rodney Bonham will conduct the service. Following the service, there will be a time of sharing and fellowship.
