LELAND — Anthony Dean “Tony,” “Shootem up” Bates, 57, born March 25, 1963, in Lexington to Irvin and Sandra Bates, peacefully passed away Sunday, March 7, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Tony was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting. He passed along his knowledge with anyone he ever met and always wanted the best for anyone. He was also a great caregiver and stood by his vows when he said, “in sickness and in health.” He will be missed by many in his family and the hunting and fishing community.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Dean Bates; grandmother, Molly Bates; and mother, Sandra Bates.

Tony is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Judy Bates; two sons, Terry and Cody Bates; three granddaughters, Danica, Lillian and Brella Bates, which his daily life revolved around; father, Irvin Bates; sister, Ravonda Hobbs; and brother, Todd Bates.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, March 13, at Elah Baptist Church, Leland. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service.
