GREENSBORO — Martin Joseph “Marty” McDonald Jr., 84, passed away Friday, June 12, 2020, peacefully at his home with family by his side.
Marty was born April 26, 1936, in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Martin Joseph Sr. and Marcella Auge McDonald. His brother, Frank; and nephew, Marty, also preceded him in death.
He grew up in the Detroit area. After graduating from St. James High School in Ferndale, Michigan, Marty proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy as a second-class radioman on the Duxbury Bay AVP-38 and at the Air Station in Norfolk, Virginia, from 1954 to 1958.
In his younger years, Marty was also known as “Quin”. He had a great sense of humor, always telling jokes and stories, especially of his younger days. He sure loved a good game of chess, and that stayed with him right until the end. In his retirement years, Marty picked up bridge, Rummikub and gin rummy and his competitive nature was no secret. It’s not about how you play the game; it is really only about…winning!
Marty had a successful 29-year career with the Federal Aviation Administration as an air traffic controller, living in multiple states throughout the Midwest until he retired and settled in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.
In April of 2017, after 36 years in the Chicago area, Marty relocated to Greensboro. He met his sweetheart and is survived by Susan Brusnahan of Greensboro; daughters, Colleen Lincke Strohofer (Hank) of Wilmington and Laurie Andersen (Doug) of Browns Summit; son, Frank McDonald (Cathy) of Schaumburg, Illinois; nine grandchildren, Ian Andersen (Kimberly), Andy Schulz, Danny Andersen, Ryan Lincke (Paula), Kristina Megger (Aaron), Kyle Lincke, Courtni Lincke and Hannah Lincke; three great-grandchildren, Delilah, Kinsley and Hattie; two sisters, Jean Hunt (Brian) of Harbor Springs, Michigan, and Shirley Vachon (Dennis) of Naples, Florida; and 12 nieces and nephews.
Marty was a very sweet man with a strong Catholic faith who prayed the Rosary every day. He regularly conveyed with heartfelt sincerity his appreciation for everyone that had a hand in his care. He will dearly be missed and will remain in our hearts forever!
