
WILMINGTON — Betty Anne McLendon Barnhill, 88, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center.
She was born Nov. 15, 1930, at Ashton Crossroads near Burgaw, to A.A. McLendon and Berta Batson McLendon. She was the widow of Walter G. Barnhill, who passed away Nov. 20, 2014. They were married for 64 years. She was also preceded in death by her son, Walter Neil Barnhill; and brothers, A.A. Jr. and George McLendon.
She is survived by her son, Randy Barnhill, and his wife, Jennifer, of Tallahassee, Florida; daughter, Melody Barnhill of Wilmington; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Holland of Winston, Georgia; and sisters-in-law, Barbara Barnhill and Cleta McLendon.
Betty was a member of Winter Park Baptist Church for 55 years, where she served on many committees and was a member of the Joy Sunday School Class. Being a wife, mother and homemaker were her greatest accomplishments. Serving the Lord and teaching her children and grandchildren about the Bible and to be giving was her greatest love. Betty enjoyed sewing, needlework and smocking, and she loved her dog “Chase,” who became her therapy dog while seeking many treats.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, at Winter Park Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Mark Teachey. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to services.
