Gene A. Spinks, 92, spent countless hours fishing and crabbing with his custom-made traps

GEORGETOWN, South Carolina — Gene A. Spinks, 92, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at home under hospice care. Born in Laurens, South Carolina, he was the youngest child of Jean A. Spinks and Birma Rickerson Spinks.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty B. Spinks; daughter, Jeannine Spinks Jackson; grandson, Joshua L. Jackson; and sisters, Louise Fesperman and Jeanelle Kendall.

He leaves behind son, Mark Spinks; daughter-in-law, Sheila; and grandson, Jeremiah Jackson, and his wife, Blair, and their daughters, Emory and Campbell.

Mr. Spinks grew up in Albemarle and graduated from Albemarle High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, where he was stationed in Hawaii. Later, he graduated from Hemphill Diesel School in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1951.

In 1956, he began his civil service career in Wilmington at Fort Fisher Air Force Station. During his 30-year tenure, he received numerous awards for meritorious civilian service.

After retirement, he enjoyed building a shrimp trawler and being a partner in Seabreeze Seafood. In 2004, he moved to Georgetown, South Carolina, where he spent countless hours fishing and crabbing with his custom made traps. Also, he marveled while watching his tomatoes and cucumbers grow.

A graveside service will be held at noon, Monday, Nov. 5, in Oleander Memorial Gardens.
